While we would have assumed that a lack of communal watching of sports – at a bar or a friend’s house, for example – would have led to more individual license requests, McCarthy said this was not the case. Interestingly, McCarthy did not think that lockdown had resulted in a spike in demand for such events. They know which events will be popular, and we scale on the fly,” McCarthy explained.
“You’ve got to plan ahead with the operator. Formula One caused a major spike of traffic in Europe recently, while operators in India had to prepare for the country’s recent cricket matches with Australia. This means Irdeto can easily scale according to predicted spikes in activity, including live sports and election nights. McCarthy argued that where Irdeto Control trumped the multi-DRM competition was in its cloud-based flexibility, allowing a very high deployment rate. McCarthy confirmed that Irdeto uses both names interchangeably for its product.
Both names pop up in the relevant materials on the company’s website and they seem to be the same service. One could be forgiven for struggling to understand how Irdeto Control differs from Irdeto Rights.
The other recent news item from Irdeto was that its multi-DRM product, Irdeto Control, had been taken up by Telekom Srbija, Serbia’s second largest video operator, to scale up its OTT offerings. “Reducing truck rolls is not a key benefit of the product.” “Generally, with truck rolls it’s about quality of service and user experience, rather than security,” he noted. That is important as hackers have multiple ways of accessing and exploiting devices – taking it over to use its CPU power, or masking its own location, for example.īut while Keys and Credentials for Routers was touted as a product that could reduce truck rolls for operators, McCarthy was keen to caveat this claim. On the benefits of hardware integration, McCarthy noted that it allows operator to turn off a single device if it becomes compromised.

Keys and Credentials for Routers can only be embedded in the hardware at the point of manufacture, essentially providing a blank operating system from which an ISP can download any apps they like. But McCarthy was keen to correct us here. The offering seemed confusing when we covered it a few weeks back, as it seemed that despite the promises of hardware integration, Irdeto was offering the same service to legacy CPE. The company worked with a host of the major silicon vendors to get its IP blocks in the core silicon, a process which McCarthy says was nothing new. McCarthy quashed any suggestions of a market first but argued that Irdeto is ahead of its main competitors, saying that the likes of Synamedia or Nagra did not offer hardware-integrated router security.ĭespite the fanfare, it seems hardware integration was a fairly run of the mill process for Irdeto. There are lock-ins in all kinds of industries, but we know that if we provide a good enough product and service at the right price, a customer is not going to want to change.”Īt the time of announcement, Faultline was unable to find any of Irdeto’s major competitors offering something similar. Of course, offering operators flexibility in this area could spell trouble for Irdeto, as it is essentially giving its customers the option of a smooth exit from its services, potentially creating a hole for revenue to quickly leak out of. “Some operators like to use this as a dormant insurance policy, as it allows them to keep their security vendor honest.”

“The CEO is in full control,” McCarthy told us. This flexibility suits the dual supply, multi-vendor security set-ups that operators are increasingly having to deploy. The main benefit of a hardware root of trust, he argued, is that ISPs can overlay security technology from any vendor they choose and are able to change this whenever suits them. “The principal of K&C is to not lock an operator into a security vendor for their encryption technology,” Irdeto’s COO, Shane McCarthy, told Faultline this week. However, it seems that the main attraction of Keys and Credentials for Routers is not the added security that hardware integration brings, but rather the flexibility it provides them in terms of choosing a security vendor. The company announced its Keys and Credentials for Routers product a few weeks ago, which Faultline covered in detail, shouting home about how hardware integration provides extra insurance for ISPs. The hope is that the insurance of this freedom will reel in business, while the solid services provided by Irdeto itself will keep clients from going any further than browsing. Irdeto is playing a game of chicken with its ISP clients, giving them the option to freely shop around elsewhere for broadband security services.
